As we begin the 2010-2011 school year here in the northern hemisphere, I want to share with you a piece by Dennis Prager entitled, "A Speech Every American High School Principal Should Give," followed by my comments.
Here's the speech, and I'll tell you at the outset that I believe many people will object to portions of it:
One of the questions I am being asked these days is, "How can I become more propaganda-proof?"
You can start by learning how to distinguish between:
- When you're being fed selective cherry-picked data and complete data;
- Data and interpretations;
- When someone is trying to inform you and when they are trying to persuade you.
I, for one, welcome complete data, multiple potential interpretations of that data, and explicitly identified attempts to persuade.
Here's the point of my last blog entry: Whether you favor or oppose an Islamic Cultural Center being built in the vicinity of Ground Zero, both perspectives contain valid wisdom regarding an extremely emotional issue. Each perspective merely believes that it would be more helpful to honor certain chunks of wisdom about this complex issue over other pieces of wisdom.
This blog post may upset as many readers as those who appreciate what I am about to say. It is about the Muslim Cultural Center that may be built a couple of blocks from the site of the terrorist attacks that obliterated the World Trade Center Towers in New York City on 9/11/2001.
I received an email today from a good-hearted well-intended friend of mine that strongly advocates a strategy for creating more Congressional accountability to its citizens. Read below what the email said, followed by the response I said to my friend. Then, in light of this example, I urge you to consider the steps you'll take when you receive seemingly credible politically oriented emails from others... BEFORE you decide whether to pass them on to others.
